What is the blood type diet?

The blood group diet was developed in the 90s by the naturopathic doctor Dr. Peter D'Adamo launched. The doctor assumes that each blood group is evolutionarily oriented for very specific foods. This means that, according to this theory, an optimal supply of food to the body is determined by the respective blood group type and decides which foods make us fat or slim.

How does the blood type diet work?

According to the doctor, there are various antibodies in our blood that react with certain proteins in food. If the food does not match the blood group, however, according to D'Adamo, the blood "clumps" and a defense reaction is the result.

However, if the “right” foods are consumed, our body should become leaner, more vital and healthier. The doctor also includes the so-called secretor status, which provides information on whether blood group antigens are present in body fluids such as saliva. For the naturopathic doctor, this is another key factor in food selection.

Blood group 0: hunter

This blood group was particularly common among hunters around 40,000 years ago. At that time, meat was the main focus of the diet. For example, people with blood group 0 should eat mainly animal and thus protein-rich foods such as meat, fish, poultry but also fruit and vegetables during the diet. Legumes, grains, and dairy products, on the other hand, should be avoided. It is therefore very reminiscent of the Paleo diet.

Blood group A: farmer

According to the theory, this blood group is said to have occurred specifically in sedentary people who mainly ate plant-based foods. For people with blood group A it is therefore important to have enough fruit and vegetables. Legumes, grains and seafood are also allowed - but generally based on a vegan diet, as cow's milk products should be avoided. Wheat is also not recommended in this context.

Blood group B: nomad

A balanced diet is key here. Blood group B is said to have arisen during the time when people were eating dairy products, vegetables and eggs. Thus, the mentioned foods as well as meat and cereals are on the menu. Poultry, wheat and rye products are apparently not tolerable for the "nomad".

Blood group AB: The puzzling one

It is puzzling because there is no particular food group in the foreground. The blood group is said to have originated when the peoples of A and B mixed. According to the theory, people with blood type AB, which occurs rarely, tolerate all foods well. Thus, this form of nutrition is characterized by mixed food, i.e. meat, vegetables, fruit, cereals and legumes. However, meat should be consumed in smaller quantities.

Other important information about the diet:Five meals a day are eaten. In order to prevent a possible nutrient deficiency, dietary supplements are recommended. The daily number of calories is between 1500 and 1800 kilocalories and should result in weight loss.

Which foods can be on the menu for all blood groups?

Another disadvantage of the blood type diet is the rather inflexible eating plan.
