Origin of the term:
The idiom refers to the Latin numerals "X" ([10)]) and "V" ([5)]). By extending the lines of the “V” downwards, an “X” was created and thus, if applicable, twice the amount (for debts, bill and so on). Until the 17th century, the script did not differentiate between the letters "U" and "V", so the earlier version was "Show someone an X for a V".
