What is the best time to study

Time planning and application deadlines: What time frames and deadlines do I have to consider when choosing a dual course of study?

When can I apply?

The apprenticeship and academic year in companies usually begins between July 1st and October 1st. At this point in time, the new trainees and dual students start their new lives.

In exactly this period, many companies are looking for the dual students for the next year. So that means that a lot of companies between July and October advertise their new positions. The application period then usually lasts until the end of the year or the beginning of the following year.

Exceptions prove the rule. There are certainly companies where the application period for the dual study program ends in August in the following year. The same applies to companies whose application deadline is March or April of the following year. In any case, you have to inform yourself in good time!

Examples of application deadlines / periods

So that you can get a first impression of the application periods for a dual study program at various companies, we have researched some data:

Dual studies at ...application time
Peek & Cloppenburgfrom August 1st
BMWIT courses from June 1st, further courses from October 1st for the start of the following year.
Otto Group1.5 years before the start of the course
AudiMid-July to mid-September 1 year before the start of the course
German Bundesbank1 - 1.5 years before the start of the course
alliancefrom September 1st for the following year
Shell Germanyby September 15 for the following year
Munich Airportby October 15 for the following year
Tchiboapprox. 12 months before the start of the training
Wacker Chemiefrom August 1st

We have researched and checked the data extensively (as of April 2020), but we cannot guarantee it. A company can of course also change its deadlines - so make sure you are well informed about the deadlines!

As you can see from the examples, some companies give an end to the application period: You have to be particularly careful here. Those who miss the deadline are unlucky. Applications submitted too late will usually not be considered.

But it can also be the case that the companies do not indicate the end of the application period at all. However, that does not mean that you can still apply two months before the start of your studies, because these companies are continuously allocating their positions. So if you apply 1.5 years in advance with a perfect application and successfully pass the selection process, you can already have your job a year before the start of training and studies. And everyone who applies later is unlucky because this place has already been taken. So it's worth being early.

I would like to start a dual course of study this year - am I too late?

No, not necessarily. The above information relates primarily to large companies that employ many dual students each year. Smaller businesses are also fine only start looking at the beginning of the year after dual trainees starting their studies in summer. Furthermore, applicants drop out from time to time, so that companies re-advertise a position. In principle, you will find dual vacancies all year round, even if a particularly large number of them are posted between July and October.

When should I get information?

If, for example, you are going to do your high school diploma in 2021 and would like to study in the same year, then you have to apply for the dual study places from mid-2020. This means that you should have considered beforehand whether a dual course of study is right for you and which course you want to study at all.

Admittedly, this is early because your classmates who are not doing a dual course of study but enrolling for a "normal" full-time course at a university or college have an extra year to decide (the application deadlines for a full-time course usually end only in July of the same year in which you start your studies).

For everyone who is interested in a dual study program, the schedule could or should therefore look something like this:
