Ready for a movie: the new Pizzeria Ristorante Molino Select in Zurich
Curtain up for a very special premiere: The Pizzeria Ristorante Molino Select opens in the premises of the oldest studio cinema in Zurich. At Limmatquai 16 in Zurich, where avant-garde films once flickered across the screen, the youngest venue of the Pizzeria Ristorante Molino is now a guest.
The restaurant with almost 100 seats was designed by the renowned atelier ushitamborriello, which has developed a modern, elegant design concept with a lot of Italianità. In the new room there is also a long-legged version of the “select” chair as a bar stool with a backrest. This was designed by Ushi Tamborriello in collaboration with the furniture manufacturer horgenglarus. The Café Select, which was attached to the cinema, gave its name to the original chairs in 1935. The renovation was carried out with great care, the history of the house was always kept in mind during the renovation. Just as much Amore goes into the Italian dishes and the first own red wine of the Pizzeria Ristorante Molino. The “Pizza and Pasta come vuoi tu” concept is also new. A special culinary performance in which the Italian zest for life is the protagonist.
Sophisticated design concept
The great spatial challenge was to keep the influences of the place and its history tangible and at the same time to reuse it. The cinema was to be preserved and the high, narrow volume of the room with its orientation towards the screen should be made tangible. And of course, special attention was paid to the characteristic spiral staircase leading to the gallery. Their location ultimately also defined the further development of the basement, the elegant curve was continued. The bar is prominently placed in front of the long wall of the former cinema hall - opposite, on the facade side, a row of tables in front of upholstered benches; They too are reminiscent of cinema seats in terms of shape and material. As an example, the former projection screen is used to support a large mirror, a reflection of life in the restaurant, a reminder of the running images of great directors from past years. Then as now, the view into the room and its image is nowhere more impressive than from the gallery. The atmospheric attitude and density of the restaurant, the handling of structures, surfaces and colors extends from the ground floor to the mezzanine. Via three further steps, guests reach the highest level, which is intertwined with the location of the former Café Select and reveals a view of Lake Zurich.
Open kitchen and boulevard terrace
Below the gallery is the heart of the Pizzeria Ristorante Molino: the kitchen, including the pizza oven with a serving station. Complex processes fit into one another in a very small space. An open kitchen behind the pizza station, which is open to the restaurant, gives the guest a clear view of the preparation of the dishes in the kitchen. The situations in front of the kitchen are intensely played out: from here, not only the lower and upper dining areas are supplied with almost 100 seats, but orders for the large terrace on Schiffländeplatz are also processed here. Incidentally, it is the first approved boulevard terrace in Zurich. Because the former owner and architect Willi Boesiger managed to officially create seats on the sidewalk in 1940.
A chair returns to its usual place
Kurt Tucholsky, Else Lasker-Schüler, Albert Einstein - the list of celebrities who sat on him is long. The original equipment of the Café-Bar Select at the time included 115 chairs from the horgenglarus manufactory. They had the product number 137S and from then on went down in history under the name "select". The chairs have a massive, circular seat frame and an almost semicircular narrow backrest, which allows the sitting position to be changed. The “select” model is still one of the cornerstones of the range today. In collaboration with the Swiss atelier ushitamborriello, a bar stool with a back was developed based on the “select”. The furniture factory was founded near Horgen in 1880 and produces numerous classics, both in-house and in cooperation with external designers and architects.
In addition to selected cocktails, aperitivo classics such as Negroni or Martini Bianco should not be missing in this stylish interior. The bar with its specially designed chairs by horgenglarus is integrated into the restaurant, as if on an Italian market square, the guests sit in the middle of the action and are part of the Dolce Vita. Speaking of which: light snacks and antipasti complement the range of drinks during the day and in the evening. In the morning, aromatic coffees and wonderfully fragrant pastries ensure an enjoyable start to the day.
Launch of "Pizza and Pasta come vuoi tu"
Crispy wood-fired pizzas, the finest pasta creations, traditional fish and meat dishes and finally wonderfully sweet dolci: The Pizzeria Ristorante Molino has been a synonym for authentic Italian dishes at the highest level for more than 30 years. Only carefully selected ingredients are prepared alla perfezione and served by Gerant Emanuele Destro and his team with passion and the best host qualities. With the launch of “Pizza and Pasta come vuoi tu”, the successful concept has now been raised to a new level. From now on, guests can put together their own favorite pizza or pasta according to their own taste. Almost like at Mamma at home - every wish is fulfilled in the Pizzeria Ristorante Molino.
First own Molino red wine
The premiere of the first in-house red wine will also be celebrated, which will now enrich the drinks menu. “Panorama - Edizione Speciale Molino” was made especially for the 19 Molino bars in Switzerland. A balanced red wine made from Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon with a rich bouquet and a fascinating overall freshness. It is produced by the Tuscan winery Collazzi, sold by the Zurich wine house Vergani 1892, with whom the Pizzeria Ristorante Molino maintains a trusting relationship. The name "Panorama" stands for the area from which the red wine comes: The Collazzi winery is located in the hills around Florence, which, like no other city, stands for craftsmanship and the fine arts. In order to ensure a high, consistent quality of the "Panorama", the wine is only bottled in magnum bottles (1.5 liters). The sun and joie de vivre of Italy, captured in a fine drop. “With love for the vine and for life.” Of course, the new “Panorama - Edizione Speciale Molino” is also on the digital wine list, which has been introduced in all Molino restaurants. The guests select the right wine for their menu in simple steps on a tablet. With the help of the integrated sommelier function, you receive recommendations as to which drop goes particularly well with the respective dish. A digital wine competence that is unparalleled in Switzerland.
