What does Buddhism say about debt

1. "This world" with 31 realms is very complex. See The Great Unified Theory. Nothing happens because of a single cause and nothing happens just like that: Multiple causes lead to multiple effects.

2. In a perfect world everyone will share everything equally and everyone will be happy. But people are not only born with different levels of wealth, but also with different levels of health, physical appearance, abilities, and so on. These are the results of Kamma (good and bad), which arose over very long periods of time in the past.

3. Nobody has everything “what he / she needs”. So we try to get what we don't have or don't want. Every time we yearn for something and try to obtain those things through immoral means, we knowingly or unknowingly go into debt.

  • If those akusala kamma (Immoral acts) affect another living being, we get into a kind of "sansaric relationship" with this being. That is why we have friends, family, and enemies. These things don't happen by chance.

4. NOTHING in this world happens by chance; everything happens because of causes. But since results (Vipaka) materialize later and even in future lives, we cannot see this principle of "cause and effect" in most cases. If we do something that is harmful to another being, we become indebted to that being. These debts have to be paid with interest that is many times higher. Consider the following:

  • When we get a loan, we have to repay the loan with interest. If we promise to repay and fail to meet that obligation, we will have to pay it with interest at some point in the future. Imagine how much interest we would have to pay on a $ 1000 loan at 6% interest over just 200 years, which is insignificant on the Zanzarian timescale. You can use the "72 rule", which says that if you do not make any monthly payments, the amount to be paid will double every (72 / interest) year, i.e. every 12 years in this case. It will double again in another 12 years, i.e. after 24 years you will have to pay $ 4000. After just 40 years, the amount will be $ 10,000. In just 200 years it will be a billion dollars!
  • Can you imagine how much money we have to pay to settle even small amounts that we didn't pay a long, long time ago?
  • We don't just have to repay monetary transactions. Imagine how much it costs to raise a child like a mother does? It is unimaginable for a long time.
  • When we have such debts, nature has created many ways to pay off such debts. Often times the same group of people are born to the same families and repay “old debts”. Or one can become a servant to another.
  • Many of the relationships we have in this life arise from "long-term debt" from many lives in the past. For example, people in the same family, community, or geographic location are born for many lives to repay debts and collect old debts. Sinhala is called relationships "sanbandha“ (san + bandha, With san = Impurity (sankhara) and bandha = "Bond ", that is, a bond due to Sankhara). Sometimes old believers even come back in the form of pesky mosquitoes, ants, bugs, etc.
  • If you take someone's life, you may have to give your own life several times over. It's scary, but we need to know that our actions have consequences.

5. Instead of paying off "old debts" in this way, there is another way to do it. When one does a good deed, merits of that good deed could be transferred to old believers via Pattidana. See Transfer of Merit (Pattidana - How Does It Work?).

6. In this beginningless one Sansara we are indebted to an incredible number of beings. So we simply transfer the merits to all beings. We think or speak in silence: "May the merits of this good deed be shared with all beings".

  • If you really do this from the heart, it will be very useful in the long run. The Buddha said this was a good way to repay old debts. However, one must do so with sincerity and truly understand the suffering caused by one's actions.

7. One could earn good merit not only through good deeds but also through insight meditation. The Buddha stated if you can Vipassana concerning. Anicca, dukkha, anatta cultivated, that leads to much more merit compared to even donations or gifts. After the meditation session, one simply transfers the merits to all beings.

  • The nice thing is that you don't lose any "merits" either. Giving merit is meritorious. One should also forgive old debts from other beings. The mind is very powerful. If done with the right intention, these thoughts too will have beneficial consequences for yourself and other beings.

8. Though we must try that Kamma Vipaka from earlier Kamma To alleviate through the use of the methods mentioned above, the main purpose of such methods is actually to purify the mind.

  • In this way we can pay off the past debts, but larger amounts will be achieved by reaching the past Sotapanna, Sakadagami, Anagami and Arahant Levels of nibbana paid. (In fact, the Buddha said when you get the Ariya Metta Mediation often makes one could relate to the debt Kamaloka settle).
  • If you have the SotapannaLevel reached, all those will be Kamma Vipakawho have a rebirth in the lower four realms (Apayas) could cause nullified. When one attains arahantship, only those become Kamma Vipaka repaid that come into effect during the remainder of the current lifetime. As it is for the Arahant there is no more rebirth, all that remain have Kamma Vipaka simply no chance of bearing fruit.

9. The first step in purifying one's mind is to do this Dasa Akusala to avoid. See Ten Immoral Acts (Dasa Akusala). You don't have to try to do everything at once.

  • It's a life journey and you can start slowly. One should first try to avoid the obviously bad actions and then move on to simple things that can be done without a lot of stress. See the texts in the Bhavana (meditation) section.
  • There is no one watching. Only you know what your intentions are: moral or immoral.
  • You will feel the benefits in terms of a less stressed mind over time. It takes time, especially at the beginning. Then it will speed up as you begin to see the benefits. 10. The Buddha said there were four ways to get into debt:

  • Yourself in Dasa Akusala actuate.
  • Getting others to do such deeds.
  • Helping others do such deeds.
  • Praise someone who does such deeds.

So you can get into debt in a total of 40 ways (4 x 10). It means exertion that Dasa Akusala gradually stop. It also takes satara iddhipada.
