A hangover is a mean thing and belatedly spoils the boozy celebration. How it comes about is not entirely clear. It is possible that a breakdown product of alcohol is so bad for the body. But it is also possible that alcohol deprives the body of important fluids, which can then lead to headaches and body aches.
Fortunately, you can steer against it. On the one hand, by eating enough and thus creating a good foundation for one or the other glass. Because fatty dishes are more difficult to digest, they stay in the stomach longer and cause alcohol to break down more slowly. So you get drunk more slowly - but not less -. On the other hand, you can also build in advance by drinking at least the same amount of water with wine, beer or bubbly.
A lot of sugar in alcohol inhibits the breakdown
The “what” also plays a role: Liqueurs, cocktails and sweet wines cause the worst hangovers because the sugar they contain inhibits the breakdown of acetaldehyde, which is produced in the body when alcohol is broken down. The cytotoxin then stays in the body longer - with noticeable consequences. And last but not least, the best hangover protection is to pull the rip cord in good time.
If your skull is still buzzing the next morning, a few home remedies will help you over the worst hangover:
- Drink plenty of water - preferably high-sodium, because this compensates for the mineral deficiency, and still, because carbonic acid irritates the stomach.
- Aspirin or Alka-Seltzer before bed can prevent a hangover. But be careful: they irritate the stomach and can cause or worsen nausea in sensitive people. It makes no sense to switch to active ingredients such as paracetamol. It is broken down by the liver, which is already struggling with the alcohol. Therefore, it is better to use externally applied remedies such as peppermint oil (applied to the forehead) against headaches.
- Even if the appetite weakens: Eat rich in minerals makes the body fit again. The legendary rollmop is just as suitable for this as a hot broth, a stew, fresh fruit and vegetables or pickles - or simply a balanced breakfast.
- Get out in the fresh air! When the circulation gets going, the body regenerates better.
