After the nutrients and oxygen have been delivered to the cells, the blood flows into the "small pulmonary circulation". Here the oxygen-poor blood is pumped back into the lungs.
The cardiovascular system also includes the blood itself and the associated blood pressure. If a problem arises with one of the parties mentioned, this has a problematic effect on the entire cardiovascular system.
The influence of lifestyle
Ailments of the cardiovascular system (such as problems with the heart, blood pressure, arteries or veins) are often referred to as "lifestyle diseases" because they are heavily dependent on the personal lifestyle in our modern times. Reasons for the frequent occurrence in our society are, for example, unhealthy eating habits paired with widespread lack of exercise, too much stress and harmful vices such as smoking or too much alcohol.
Micronutrients to support the cardiovascular system
A lot can be done for an intact cardiovascular system through your own lifestyle, sufficient exercise, but also through your daily diet. Sufficient fruit and vegetables, fresh herbs, vegetable oils, fish, whole grain products, nuts and little meat provide a healthy basis for this. The body should be supplied with the full range of micronutrients (vitamins, minerals and trace elements), because they work with them in various places so that our complex cardiovascular system functions smoothly and is protected.
Iron, vitamins B12 and B6 - for the transport of oxygen into the cells
When we take in oxygen through breathing, it is transported by the blood to the cells and organs. This is done by hemoglobin, a protein molecule in the red blood cells that can easily bind and release oxygen. To support this oxygen transport in our blood, iron is particularly valuable, because iron supports the normal formation of red blood cells and hemoglobin. But vitamin B12 and vitamin B6 also contribute to the normal formation of red blood cells and thus support the transport of oxygen in the body.
Since iron is involved in the formation of red blood cells and hemoglobin, it is also important that the iron can be processed well in our body. First and foremost is vitamin C, because it increases the body's iron absorption. Once in the body, copper helps to ensure normal iron transport in the body. Riboflavin (vitamin B2) then contributes to a normal iron metabolism.
Without vitamin D there is no calcium
We take in calcium through our diet, for example through dairy products. Calcium is an important mineral for humans. Although 99 percent of all calcium in the body is stored in the bones, calcium also plays an important role in numerous other processes, including blood clotting. At the same time, too high a calcium level in the blood can cause problems. Vitamin D is involved in the normal absorption and utilization of calcium.
Other important micronutrients
The "mood vitamin" thiamine (also called vitamin B1) plays an important role in our cardiovascular system because it contributes to normal heart function. Vitamin C is very important for our arteries and veins because it contributes to the normal function of blood vessels.
Homocysteine - the unwanted metabolic product
If simple protein building blocks from our food, the amino acids, are broken down by our body, homocysteine is created. In order to break down this harmful and undesirable intermediate product, the body should be supplied with sufficient folic acid, vitamin B6 and vitamin B12, because they contribute to a normal homocysteine metabolism.
