How do I exercise my rights?

Costs for another means of transport (e.g. bus or taxi):

  • With a scheduled arrival time between 0 a.m. and 5 a.m. and
  • an expected delay of at least 60 minutes at the destination station
    or
  • if a train fails if it is the last scheduled connection of the day and
  • the destination station can no longer be reached by midnight without using another means of transport.

the customer will be reimbursed the costs for another means of transport up to a maximum of 80 euros *) **),

  • if the railway company does not provide any other means of transport and
  • the customer cannot contact the railway company for reasons for which it is responsible (contacting the ticket sales or information point of the railway company or the staff of the train used on site).

*) This maximum amount does not apply in cases of assistance within the meaning of Article 18 Paragraph 2 c) and Paragraph 3 of Regulation (EC) No. 1371/2007.
**) Special feature of BC 100: Within the period of validity of a BC 100, a maximum of 25% of the BC 100 price paid will be reimbursed for expenses for onward journeys by taxi / car.


Costs for overnight accommodation (e.g. hotel or other accommodation):

  • Is it not possible to continue the journey on the same day due to a train cancellation or a delay?
  • the continuation of the journey on the same day is unreasonable,

reasonable accommodation costs will be reimbursed for the customer,

  • if the railway company does not provide overnight accommodation and
  • the customer cannot contact the railway company for reasons for which it is responsible (contacting the ticket sales or information point of the railway company or the staff of the train used on site).

Alternatively, the railway company provides the customer with another means of transport, provided that this is cheaper. The customer will also be reimbursed the costs for another means of transport up to a maximum of 80 euros *) **),

  • if the railway company does not provide any other means of transport and
  • the customer cannot contact the railway company for reasons for which it is responsible (contacting the ticket sales or information point of the railway company or the staff of the train used on site).

*) This maximum amount does not apply in cases of assistance within the meaning of Article 18 Paragraph 2 c) and Paragraph 3 of Regulation (EC) No. 1371/2007.

Please note:

If the railway company provides the customer with another means of transport or overnight accommodation, the use thereof has priority over a self-organized alternative. In this case, the customer cannot claim reimbursement of the costs for another means of transport or an overnight stay, unless he has unsuccessfully tried to contact the ticket sales or information office of the railway company or the staff of the train used on site.
